A NEW APPROACH TO CARBON FIBER ROD BUILDING

For years, American Tackle has been at the forefront of incorporating a variety of woven carbon fiber materials into its rod blanks and components, notable examples including the Bushido, Matrix and Atrex Series rod blanks, to the G2 line of handles, grips and reel seats (culminating in the ICAST 2020 award-winning Tsuka Handle System). With the rod component industry following suit shortly after, American Tackle was tasked with a new challenge: how can we further innovate, to push the needle forward on quality and design to give rod builders and anglers the best possible product?

Enter: Forged Carbon Fiber.

Also referred to as forged composite or FRC, forged carbon fiber has a different manufacturing process that results in a great strength/weight ratio, high durability, as well as a very unique aesthetic quality. These qualities have made forged carbon fiber an increasingly popular material seen in a variety of other industries: automotive parts, electronics, sporting goods, aerospace, among many others, and American Tackle took the plunge in incorporating it into a 1-piece handle system for both casting and spinning rod builds. And with the result netting both Best of Category and Best of Show at ICAST 2023, we think the decision was absolutely worth it.

Feels great, Looks sweet, minor issues.

The Tsuka 2 feels great. The sensitivity is way different than your standard cork or win with a skeleton seat. Its more dispersed throughout the hand and end of the handle not just in the fingers touching the blank. I got two of these and they have a small I.D. so I had to really cut my blanks short in order for them to fit. they both had different I.D. also. They ended up making my 7'6" blanks a 7'3" blank and a 7' 4" blank. that ended up being roughly 9-10" removed just for them to fit and they were tight. Other than that my only issue I had was the hood check area is pretty ugly. Pretty exposed with a large gap. You could build an epoxy ramp to deal with this. But for the price they should offer different size hood checks that you can glue on, and reduce the gap for a cleaner more finished look.
These would be excellent on a small diameter bottom contact type rod.
The blanks used were NFC X-Ray, and Rainshadow RX 10 M/Hs.

I built three rods using the Tsuka 2 baitcast handle . I always build for my personal use before offering to a customer. My impression was favorable from a fishing standpoint from a building point of view I found having to balance the rods required additional weight to the rod as a whole. I pride myself for building the lightest rods that I can. However, after balancing the rods the feel was good. From that I have decided to recommend it to customers that understand weight and balance. I am building one now in combination with a NEPS82MHF. Total length 6’10”. Thanks for the innovation ! Customers felt the grip was a bit slippery. After I fished it myself I felt the same.

Tsuka 2

I really like the handle system minus the smaller diameter I couldn’t use it on the rod I wanted to use it on for the technique I wanted it for.
